What’s included in an EMDR Intensive
An intensive isn’t just a long appointment. It’s a complete, structured container for focused healing, designed so you’re prepared going in and supported coming out.
- 90-minute pre-intensive assessment. Clarify your goals, review your history and current supports, make sure EMDR is a good fit, and build a personalized plan.
- Intensive day(s), three hours of therapy each. April reserves the whole day for you, with time for grounding and reflection built in.
- 90-minute post-intensive follow-up, one to two weeks later, to integrate what shifted and decide on next steps.
- A workbook to support your preparation and integration.
A private-pay practice, by design
April’s practice is private pay. That keeps your care between the two of you: no diagnosis has to be shared with an insurance company to approve sessions, and no plan decides how often you come or how long you stay. You choose the format that fits your goals, whether that’s steady weekly EMDR therapy, 2-hour extended sessions, or a focused EMDR Intensive.
Using out-of-network benefits
Many health plans include out-of-network mental health benefits. For weekly and extended sessions, you pay April directly and request a superbill, a detailed receipt you can submit to your insurance company for possible partial reimbursement. Before you start, call your plan and ask:
- Do I have out-of-network benefits for outpatient mental health?
- What is my out-of-network deductible, and how much of it have I met?
- What percentage of the cost is reimbursed after the deductible?
EMDR Intensives are private pay and aren’t eligible for reimbursement, because insurance plans are built around standard-length weekly sessions rather than extended intensive days.
Your right to a Good Faith Estimate
Under the No Surprises Act, clients who pay privately have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate of expected charges before services begin, including psychotherapy. You’ll receive one before your first session. Learn more at cms.gov/nosurprises.
How to compare the cost to weekly therapy
One intensive day includes three hours of therapy, about the same therapeutic time as three weekly sessions, but without the gaps in between where momentum can fade. A three-day intensive includes nine hours of therapy, plus three hours of assessment and follow-up. For many busy women, the real cost of weekly therapy is also measured in months of commuting and rescheduling. For others, steady weekly support is the better fit. Both are good options, and these questions can help you decide.
How much does an EMDR intensive cost?
With April Forella in Palm City, a one-day EMDR Intensive is $1,350, two days are $2,025 and three days are $2,700. Each package includes a 90-minute pre-intensive assessment, three hours of therapy per intensive day, a 90-minute post-intensive follow-up and a workbook. Each additional three-hour day is $675.
Does insurance cover EMDR intensives?
No. EMDR Intensives are private pay and aren’t eligible for insurance reimbursement. Insurance plans are generally built around standard-length weekly sessions and medical-necessity reviews, which don’t fit extended, focused intensive days. For weekly or extended sessions, clients with out-of-network benefits can request a superbill to submit for possible partial reimbursement.
Why choose private pay for EMDR?
Private pay lets your treatment follow your goals rather than plan limits. You choose the format, whether that’s 60 minutes, a 2-hour extended session or a focused intensive, and no diagnosis has to be shared with an insurer to justify your care. Many women see it as an investment in themselves. You’ll receive a Good Faith Estimate of expected costs before you begin.
Is an EMDR intensive worth the cost compared to weekly therapy?
It depends on your goals. One three-hour intensive day is roughly the therapy time of three weekly sessions, delivered without the stop-and-start between appointments. Women who are short on time, feel stuck after years of talk therapy, or want to focus on one specific issue often find the format a good use of time and money. Weekly therapy remains a great option too.
How much is a regular EMDR session?
Weekly EMDR therapy is $200 for a 60-minute session, or $400 for a 2-hour extended session. April’s practice is private pay. If your plan includes out-of-network benefits, you can request a superbill and may be reimbursed for part of the cost, depending on your plan and deductible.
Can I use out-of-network benefits for therapy?
Often, yes, for weekly and extended sessions. You pay April directly and request a superbill, a detailed receipt you submit to your insurance company. Call your plan before you start and ask about your out-of-network outpatient mental health benefits, deductible and reimbursement rate. EMDR Intensives are private pay and not eligible for reimbursement.
Can I use an HSA or FSA for an EMDR intensive?
Psychotherapy is generally an eligible medical expense for HSA and FSA accounts, but every plan is different. Check with your plan administrator before booking.
What happens if I need to reschedule my intensive?
Because April reserves the entire day for your intensive, scheduling details and policies are reviewed during your pre-intensive assessment. Ask about them during your free consultation so there are no surprises.
