Grief & Loss Counseling

Grief Counseling in Palm City, FL for Loss That Doesn’t Make Sense

Grief doesn’t follow a schedule. It doesn’t care how strong you are, how full your calendar is or how many people are counting on you. It arrives in waves, lingers in quiet moments, and sometimes shows up months or years after a loss you thought you had already handled. If you’re looking for grief counseling in Palm City, you may be wondering why it still hurts this much, or why it feels so different from what you expected.

I know grief personally. Over eight years, I lost several close family members, some expected and some sudden, and each loss hit differently. It wasn’t only sadness. It was exhaustion, disorientation and moments of guilt for still carrying the pain. That experience changed how I sit with the women I work with. I don’t rush grief. I help you make room for it, honor it and gently begin to heal forward, however long that takes.

Sound like you?

Grief counseling may help if…

You don’t need to be in a crisis to reach out. If a few of these feel familiar, it’s worth a conversation.

  • You hold it together all day, then fall apart in the car on the way home
  • You avoid certain songs, places or photos because they feel like too much
  • You wonder if you’re grieving “wrong” because it’s been a while and the pain still shows up
  • You feel numb when you think you should feel more, then guilty about the numbness
  • You lost more than one person close together and never had time to grieve any of them
  • Anniversaries, holidays or a familiar scent can knock you sideways
  • The loss was sudden or traumatic, and you keep replaying the final moments
  • You’re grieving something others don’t see as a loss, like a friendship or the life you expected
  • You’re tending to everyone else’s grief while quietly setting your own aside

How April works

How I support women through grief

Grief counseling with me is unhurried. There’s no timeline to meet and no stage you’re supposed to be in. We make room for every part of the loss, including love, anger, relief or regret, and use EMDR when parts of the grief feel stuck.

  1. 01

    Room to tell the story

We begin by honoring who or what you lost and what your grief has looked like since. You can share as much or as little as you want. Being heard without being hurried can bring its own kind of relief.

  2. 02

Support for the body and daily life

Grief is physical. It affects sleep, appetite, energy and concentration. We use emotional-regulation and grounding tools so you can get through the workday, the holidays and the hard dates without feeling flattened.

  3. 03

EMDR for stuck or traumatic grief

When certain images, regrets or moments keep looping, EMDR can help your brain process them. The aim is for those painful snapshots to soften, leaving more room for warm memories of the person you love.

  4. 04

    Faith, if you want it

If your faith is part of how you grieve, I offer optional Christian counseling, with prayer and Scripture woven in only at your request. If it isn’t, it simply won’t be part of our work.

When grief doesn’t make sense: complicated, delayed and layered loss

Some grief moves through you slowly and softens with time. Other grief gets stuck. Complicated grief can look like intense longing that doesn’t ease, difficulty accepting the loss, or a feeling that part of you stopped when they did. Delayed grief may surface long after the funeral, often set off by a milestone, a move or another loss that cracks the first one open again.

Multiple losses add another layer. When several people die within a few years, there’s often no room to grieve one before the next arrives. You may feel disoriented, numb, or guilty that you can’t keep track of your own feelings. High-achieving women in particular tend to push through, back to work and back to caring for everyone else. But grief doesn’t disappear when it’s set aside. It waits. I wrote about my own experience in When Grief Doesn’t Make Sense.

  • A friendship that ended without closure
  • The version of yourself before a trauma or diagnosis
  • The family you wished you had growing up
  • A child you hoped to have
  • A life path you thought you’d be on by now

How EMDR for grief can help when loss feels frozen

EMDR isn’t only for trauma. It can be a meaningful tool for grief, especially when parts of the loss feel frozen in place. Maybe it’s the hospital room, the phone call, the conversation you never got to have, or the guilt that you weren’t there at the end. Moments like these can become stuck memories that replay with the same intensity long after the loss itself.

In EMDR for grief, we target those specific moments and the beliefs attached to them, like “I should have done more” or “I can’t go on without them.” As your brain processes them, many women find the memories feel less sharp and that they can recall their loved one with more warmth and less pain. EMDR doesn’t erase grief or the love underneath it. The goal is to help your grief move again. You can learn about each phase on my EMDR therapy page.

Weekly grief counseling or an EMDR Intensive?

Many women prefer weekly 60-minute sessions for grief. A regular rhythm gives you a steady place to set the weight down, especially through anniversaries, holidays and the many firsts that follow a loss. Weekly grief counseling in Palm City also leaves time between sessions for the natural ebb and flow of grief. Some weeks we may focus on a memory; other weeks on simply getting through a hard date, a difficult family gathering or the first season without them.

If one part of your loss feels stuck, such as a traumatic death or images from a final hospital stay, an EMDR Intensive may help you focus on it in a concentrated way. Intensives involve a 90-minute assessment, 3-hour processing days and a follow-up one to two weeks later. They tend to fit best once you have some stability and support around you, and they aren’t for anyone in crisis. If grief has settled into an ongoing low mood, my page on depression therapy for women may also help.

Imagine…

  • Imagine thinking of them and feeling warmth first, before the ache.
  • Imagine moving through an anniversary with sadness that feels honest rather than overwhelming.
  • Imagine setting down the guilt about the last conversation, or the one you never had.
  • Imagine making room for joy again without feeling you’re betraying the person you lost.
  • Imagine telling your story without having to hold your breath.
  • Imagine grief becoming part of your story instead of the whole of your every day.

Common questions

Grief Counseling: what women ask

April Forella, LMHC

Answers from April Forella, LMHC, EMDR Certified Therapist

Can EMDR help with grief?

It can. EMDR is often associated with trauma, but it may also help when grief feels stuck, especially after a sudden or traumatic loss, or when guilt and painful images keep replaying. EMDR doesn’t take away your love or your memories. It aims to reduce the intensity of the most painful moments so you can remember your loved one with more peace.

How do I know if my grief is normal or complicated?

There’s no single normal way to grieve, and grief often lasts longer than people expect. It may be worth reaching out if months have passed and the pain isn’t easing at all, if you’re struggling to function, if you avoid everything connected to the loss, or if you keep replaying how it happened. You don’t need to meet a threshold to deserve support. If you’re having thoughts of not wanting to live, call or text 988 right away.

How long does grief counseling take?

It depends on you and on the loss. Some women come for a season to get through the first year. Others come because an old loss has resurfaced and they’re finally ready to work through it. We’ll set goals together and check in regularly about how things are shifting. I don’t rush grief, and there’s no deadline for feeling better.

Is grief counseling covered by insurance?

I’m a private-pay practice. Sessions are $200 for 60 minutes, and you’ll receive a Good Faith Estimate before we begin. Paying privately gives you room to choose the pace and session length your grief needs, including 2-hour extended sessions. If your plan includes out-of-network mental health benefits, I can provide a superbill for you to submit for possible partial reimbursement. EMDR Intensives are private pay.

Is there a grief therapist near Stuart, FL?

My office is in Palm City, about 10 to 15 minutes from Stuart. I work with women from Stuart, Jensen Beach, Port St. Lucie, Hobe Sound and beyond who are navigating recent losses, old grief that has resurfaced, and losses that don’t look traditional. You can call (561) 818-6964 to set up a free phone consultation.

Can my faith be part of grief counseling?

If you’d like it to be, yes. My own faith has been an anchor through my grief, and I offer optional Christian counseling that integrates prayer and Scripture only when you ask for it. If faith isn’t part of your life, or if grief has left you questioning it, that’s welcome too. We follow your lead.
