Therapy for Women

Therapy for High-Achieving Women in Palm City, Florida

From the outside, you look like you have it handled. You run the meeting, remember the birthdays, answer the late-night texts and still show up early. Inside, you’re running on fumes, replaying conversations at 2 a.m. and wondering why “fine” feels so heavy. If you’ve been searching for a therapist for women in Stuart or Palm City who understands that gap between how life looks and how it feels, you’re in the right place. I’m April Forella, LMHC, an EMDR Certified Therapist, and I work with the woman who is tired of being the strong one.

Before I became a counselor, I spent 23 years in business. I know the pressure of deadlines, performance reviews and being the one who always delivers, because I lived it. Today my practice is devoted to adult women: professionals, moms, caregivers, and the helpers who hold everyone else up. Together we look beneath the overthinking, the guilt and the constant motion, and we work with the experiences and beliefs that keep you braced. You don’t need the right words, and you don’t need to have it together here. You simply need to show up.

Sound like you?

This may be you if…

You don’t need to be in a crisis to reach out. If a few of these feel familiar, it’s worth a conversation.

  • You’re the one everyone calls in a crisis, and you can’t remember the last time you called someone for yourself.
  • Your calendar is full, your to-do list is longer, and rest feels like something you have to earn first.
  • You look confident in meetings but second-guess nearly every decision once you’re alone.
  • You replay conversations long after they end, combing them for what you should have said differently.
  • Your yes comes out automatically, even when you’re depleted, because no feels like letting someone down.
  • You’ve read the books and you know your patterns, yet knowing why hasn’t changed how you feel.
  • You’re a mom, a caregiver, a professional (or all three), and there’s no room left on the list for you.
  • Something from your past still shapes how you react today, even though you wish it didn’t.
  • You’re tired of hearing “just relax” from people who have no idea what you’re carrying.

How April works

How I Work With Women Who Carry a Lot

Our work is tailored to you, not a formula. We start with what feels most pressing, build steadiness first, and then use EMDR and other evidence-based approaches to reach what lives underneath the overwhelm. You set the pace, and you stay in control.

  1. 01

    EMDR for the beliefs underneath

Many capable women carry quiet core beliefs such as “I’m not enough,” “I have to hold it all together” or “If I rest, something will fall apart.” EMDR uses bilateral stimulation to help your brain reprocess the experiences where those beliefs took root, so they have less grip on how you feel today.

  2. 02

    Resourcing before anything else

Before we process anything, we build grounding and calming skills you can use in session and in the car afterward. Feeling resourced first is built into how EMDR is designed, and it helps you stay within your window of tolerance.

  3. 03

    Body, mind and relationships

Alongside EMDR, I draw from CBT, somatic and attachment-based work and Polyvagal-informed nervous-system care. That means we pay attention to your thoughts, your body’s signals and the relationship patterns that keep pulling you back into over-functioning.

  4. 04

    Weekly sessions or an intensive

Some women prefer weekly 60-minute sessions that fit around work and family. Others want focused, uninterrupted time in an EMDR Intensive. We’ll talk through both during your free consultation and choose what fits your life right now.

A Therapist for Women Who Look Fine and Feel Exhausted

High-functioning is not the same as well. Many of the women I see are the first to volunteer and the last to sit down. They manage teams, households, aging parents and kids’ schedules, often all in the same afternoon. Because they keep performing, the people around them assume they’re okay. Sometimes they assume it, too, until the exhaustion starts leaking out as irritability, sleepless nights, tears in the car or a short fuse with the people they love most.

This pattern rarely starts in adulthood. Often it begins in a childhood where being helpful, easy or impressive felt like the safest way to belong. Your nervous system learned that staying one step ahead kept trouble away. That strategy may have carried you through school, career and motherhood. It just wasn’t designed to run forever. Therapy offers a place to set it down for an hour, get curious about where it came from, and decide what you actually want to keep.

How EMDR Therapy Helps High-Achieving Women

You may understand exactly why you overwork or overthink. You can trace it to a demanding parent, a painful divorce or a workplace that rewarded never saying no. But knowing why doesn’t always make you feel different. Insight lives in the thinking part of the brain, while the alarm that fires when you disappoint someone runs deeper. EMDR, or Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, helps your brain reprocess the memories, emotions and body sensations tied to the belief that you have to earn your place.

EMDR follows a structured eight-phase protocol. We begin with your history and goals, build resources, and then identify a target: a specific memory, a present-day trigger and the negative belief attached to it. Using eye movements or alternating taps, your brain does its own processing while you stay present and in control. You don’t have to share every detail, and you can pause anytime. Read more on my EMDR therapy page or in my post on how EMDR can help high-achieving women reclaim their energy.

  • “I’m not enough unless I’m achieving.”
  • “My needs come last.”
  • “If I let go, everything falls apart.”
  • “I can’t trust myself to decide.”

Weekly Therapy or an EMDR Intensive: Choosing What Fits Your Life

Weekly therapy gives you a steady rhythm: a protected hour each week to process, practice new skills and notice change as it unfolds. A 60-minute session is $200, and because my practice is private pay, your treatment plan is built around your goals rather than plan limits. For many women balancing careers and families, weekly work is the right pace, especially when there are several threads to untangle or when support over time matters as much as the processing itself. Consistency builds trust, and trust makes deeper work possible.

An EMDR Intensive condenses that work into longer, focused blocks. It begins with a 90-minute assessment, continues with one to three days of three-hour sessions in my Palm City office, and closes with a 90-minute follow-up one to two weeks later. Intensives can suit women who are short on time, feel stuck after previous therapy and are emotionally steady enough for deeper work. They can even be done alongside your current therapist. Packages are outlined on the intensive pricing page.

Imagine…

  • Imagine ending a workday and actually being off, without rehearsing tomorrow’s problems on the drive home.
  • Imagine asking for help without first proving you’ve tried everything on your own.
  • Imagine making a decision and letting it stand, instead of circling back three more times.
  • Imagine your kids, partner or team getting the patient version of you more often than the depleted one.
  • Imagine feeling proud of what you’ve built and also allowed to rest in it.
  • Imagine knowing your worth doesn’t rise and fall with how much you got done today.

Common questions

Therapy for Women: what women ask

April Forella, LMHC

Answers from April Forella, LMHC, EMDR Certified Therapist

Do you only work with women?

My practice focuses on adult women, especially high-achieving women, moms, caregivers, professionals and helpers such as therapists. That focus lets me go deep on the patterns that so often show up for women who carry a lot: perfectionism, people-pleasing, burnout, anxiety and old experiences that still shape the present. I don’t work with children or teens. If you’re not sure whether we’re a fit, the free phone consultation is a good place to find out.

How much does therapy cost, and is it covered by insurance?

Individual sessions are $200 for 60 minutes and $400 for a 2-hour extended session. My practice is private pay, and you’ll receive a Good Faith Estimate as required by the No Surprises Act. If your health plan includes out-of-network mental health benefits, you may be able to request partial reimbursement with a superbill (a detailed receipt) I provide. EMDR Intensives are priced separately ($1,350, $2,025 or $2,700 depending on length) and are private pay.

What happens in a free consultation?

It’s a short phone call where you can share a little about what’s bringing you to therapy and ask anything you’d like about how I work, EMDR, scheduling or fees. There’s no pressure to commit. My goal is to help you sense whether this feels like the right fit, and if it doesn’t, to point you in a helpful direction. You can reach me at (561) 818-6964 or april@aprilforella.com.

I’ve been to therapy before. How would this be different?

Many women come to me after talk therapy that helped them understand their patterns but didn’t change how those patterns feel. EMDR is designed to work with the stored memories, emotions and body sensations underneath, not just the story about them. We’ll still talk, and we’ll still build skills, but the aim is to help old experiences have less power over your present, not only to understand them better.

Can you help if I’m a mom or caregiver with almost no free time?

Yes, and I take that limit seriously. We can plan sessions around your weekday schedule, and some women find an EMDR Intensive easier to arrange than months of weekly appointments because it concentrates the work into a few planned days. We’ll also make sure therapy doesn’t become one more thing you have to do perfectly. Coming as you are, tired and unfinished, is more than enough.

Do you offer Christian counseling?

Yes, if you want it. I’m a Christian, and for clients who ask, I can integrate prayer and Scripture into our work. It’s entirely optional. If faith isn’t part of how you want to approach therapy, it won’t be part of our sessions. Either way, your values and beliefs are respected, and you lead the way on what feels right for you.
