Midlife & Life Transitions

Midlife Therapist for Women in Palm City, Florida: What Do You Want for Yourself Now?

For years, you’ve known exactly what was expected of you. You built the career, raised the kids, held the family together and kept everyone’s calendar in your head. Now something has shifted. The house is quieter, the job no longer fits, your parents need you in new ways, or a relationship has changed. And a question you haven’t had time to ask is suddenly loud: “What do I want for myself now?” As a midlife therapist for women in Palm City, I help you sit with that question instead of running from it.

Midlife transitions can bring grief and relief at the same time. You may miss who you were, feel restless about who you’re becoming, and wonder whether it’s selfish to want more. Many women I work with have spent decades putting everyone else first, and they aren’t quite sure where they fit in their own lives. Life transitions counseling gives you room to slow down, sort through what’s ending and what’s beginning, and make choices that reflect who you are today, not who you had to be.

Sound like you?

Is this where you are?

You don’t need to be in a crisis to reach out. If a few of these feel familiar, it’s worth a conversation.

  • Your kids have launched, and the quiet house feels more like loss than freedom.
  • The career you worked so hard for doesn’t feel like yours anymore, but changing course feels risky.
  • You’re caring for an aging parent while still holding up everyone else.
  • A divorce, separation or shift in your marriage has you asking who you are on your own.
  • You catch yourself thinking, “Is this it?” and then feel guilty for asking.
  • Your energy and priorities are changing, and your old routines don’t fit anymore.
  • You’ve said yes to everyone for so long that you’re not sure what you actually enjoy.
  • Old regrets or memories are resurfacing now that life has slowed down a little.
  • You feel restless, flat or stuck, and you can’t quite name why.

How April works

How we’ll work through this transition

Midlife isn’t a problem to fix. It’s a season to understand. We’ll make room for what you’re grieving, get curious about what you want, and work through the old beliefs that keep you from moving forward. Your goals guide the work, and we take it one step at a time.

  1. 01

    Make space for the loss

Even welcome changes involve endings. Naming what you’re letting go of, whether it’s a role, a relationship or a version of yourself, helps you stop carrying it silently.

  2. 02

    Reconnect with what you want

After years of meeting other people’s needs, your own preferences can feel blurry. We’ll explore your values, interests and limits so your next steps come from you, not from obligation or habit.

  3. 03

    Loosen old beliefs with EMDR

Sometimes the fear isn’t about the change itself. It’s an old belief like “I have to earn my place” or “It’s too late for me.” EMDR can help process the experiences behind those beliefs so they have less say in your decisions.

  4. 04

    Practice new boundaries

Transitions often call for saying no in new places: with grown children, aging parents, a partner or work. We’ll practice boundaries that feel both kind and clear, with less guilt.

Life Transitions Counseling in Palm City for Women Who Held Everything Together

Midlife has a way of stacking several transitions on top of each other. An empty nest arrives the same year a parent needs more care. A career shift lines up with changes in your marriage or your health. Each one alone would take adjustment; together, they can leave you feeling unsteady in a life that used to feel familiar. Life transitions counseling gives these changes a place to land, so they aren’t all swirling in your head at 2 a.m.

Many women who come to me in Palm City have been the reliable one for decades: the planner, the fixer, the person who remembers everything. That strength served you well. But when the roles that defined you start to shift, you may discover you’ve had very little practice asking what you need. Therapy is a place to practice that question out loud, without having to know the answer yet. We can work with transitions like these:

  • Empty nest and a changing relationship with adult children
  • Career change, a new venture, or stepping back from work
  • Caregiving for aging parents
  • Divorce, separation or a shift in your marriage
  • Reinventing yourself after years of putting everyone else first

How EMDR Helps When You Feel Stuck in Midlife

One of the reasons women seek EMDR therapy with me is feeling stuck in midlife: questioning purpose, identity or direction, and not knowing how to move. Often the stuckness isn’t about a lack of options. It’s that something old gets activated every time you consider a new path. A voice that says you’re being selfish. A fear of failing in front of people. A memory of being told your hopes were unrealistic, or that other people’s needs always come first.

EMDR therapy helps process the experiences behind those reactions so you can think about your future with more clarity and less fear. Using an eight-phase approach and bilateral stimulation, we target specific memories, beliefs and present-day triggers, always after building resources so you feel grounded. You stay in control and can pause anytime. The goal isn’t to tell you what to choose. It’s to help you choose from a calmer, steadier place. Learn more about how EMDR works.

Weekly Sessions or an EMDR Intensive During a Life Transition

Weekly therapy works well when you’re in the middle of a transition and want steady support while things unfold: a child leaving home, a parent’s declining health, a divorce in progress. Meeting regularly gives you a consistent place to think, feel and plan, and lets us respond to whatever each week brings. Sessions are 60 minutes, and we can adjust how often we meet as your life settles into its new shape.

If you already know what’s holding you back, such as an old belief, a painful memory or a pattern that keeps repeating, an EMDR Intensive can offer concentrated time to work on it. Intensives include a pre-intensive assessment, one or more three-hour days in my Palm City office, and a follow-up session. They tend to fit women who are emotionally stable, short on time and ready to focus. My post on whether an intensive is the right fit for high-achieving women walks through the questions to ask.

A Note From April on Changing Direction

Before my career in counseling, I spent 23 years in business. I know firsthand that a working life can change direction, and that a new chapter can begin well after the first one was written. I don’t assume my path looks anything like yours; every woman’s midlife is her own. But I do understand that reinventing yourself can feel exciting and unnerving at the same time, and that both of those feelings deserve room in the conversation.

Whatever change you’re facing, you don’t need a five-year plan to start therapy. You don’t even need to know what you want yet. Plenty of women begin with something like, “I just know something has to shift.” That’s enough. We’ll start with where you are, notice what matters to you now, and take the next step together. Healing isn’t about becoming someone different. It’s about feeling free to be more fully yourself.

Imagine…

  • Imagine walking through a quiet house and feeling space instead of emptiness.
  • Imagine making a decision about your work, your marriage or your time based on what you want, not what’s expected.
  • Imagine visiting your aging parent with compassion and clear limits, instead of guilt and exhaustion.
  • Imagine answering “What do you enjoy?” without having to think about everyone else first.
  • Imagine looking at the years ahead with curiosity instead of dread.
  • Imagine recognizing yourself again, and liking who you’re becoming.

Common questions

Midlife Transitions Therapy: what women ask

April Forella, LMHC

Answers from April Forella, LMHC, EMDR Certified Therapist

Is midlife therapy only for women going through a crisis?

Not at all. Many women come to therapy in midlife not because something is falling apart, but because something is shifting and they want to handle it well. You might be facing an empty nest, a career change, caregiving or a relationship transition, or you might simply feel restless and unsure what’s next. Therapy can help you make sense of the change and move forward with intention instead of on autopilot.

What does a life transitions counselor help with?

Life transitions counseling helps you process what’s ending, adjust to what’s new, and make choices that fit who you are now. With me, that may include sorting through grief and mixed feelings, clarifying your values, practicing boundaries with family or work, and addressing old beliefs that make change feel frightening. When past experiences are keeping you stuck, we may use EMDR alongside CBT and other approaches.

Can EMDR help if I don’t think I have trauma?

EMDR is a trauma-focused therapy, but painful experiences don’t have to be catastrophic to leave a mark. Many women carry smaller hurts that shaped beliefs like “My needs don’t matter” or “I can’t trust myself,” and those beliefs often get loud during midlife decisions. EMDR may help process those experiences so they have less power over your present. We’ll talk about whether it fits your goals before we begin.

How much does therapy cost, and is it covered by insurance?

Sessions are $200 for 60 minutes, and 2-hour sessions are $400. I’m a private-pay practice, and self-pay clients receive a Good Faith Estimate before services begin. Private pay keeps your care between us, with no diagnosis sent to an insurance company for approval. If you have out-of-network benefits, I can provide a superbill for possible partial reimbursement. EMDR Intensives are private pay. You can ask any questions about cost during your free consultation.

Can I see you in person in Palm City?

Yes. I see clients in person at my office at 901 SW Martin Downs Blvd., Suite 306, in Palm City, by appointment Monday through Friday. EMDR Intensives are held in person there as well. Telehealth for clients located in Florida may be possible when clinically appropriate, and we can discuss it during your consultation.
